Popty Stout (Cwib)

Stove Story…..

Popty Stout is stout and proud, hardworking and grounded. This is a penguin to rely on.  It has the Stock Cube firebox, a top oven box and side convector panels making it wider than the Popty Cube (Ciwb).

In with that robust nature their is room for joy, it has all the friday night-waiting for you to come home -flavour of its dark and frothy namesake.

We had to have a Popty series, welsh for oven. Who wouldn’t want to pop something in a popty? It is an old word possibly originating from the old shared bakehouses. “Pobi”, bake and “Ty”, house. We love the association with shared baking and perhaps stretching a hand back through the history to other generations who also cooked on solid fuel.

Whats More

Logs sit directly on the vermiculite bricks on the base of the stove, there is no need for a grate. It has a generous fire box, sized for logs 300mm long and an even more generous piece of glass, offering you a wonderful clear view of the roaring fire.

It is beautifully simple to control, there is one air control knob. This is both the air boost, when fully extended and finer control when eased inwards. Wood burns better on a bed of ash, but when you do want to empty it, you just scoop it out from the base of the firebox. We have a tool called a “sgŵp” (pronounced scoop), available in our online shop, designed specifically for stoves without grates, like the Popty series.

The efficiency is 82.4%. It is an Eco design stove, suitable for use in smoke control zones.

CONVECTOR PANELS
As hot air created by heat from the stove’s bodywork expands, it becomes lighter than the air outside the stove and rises up inside the convector panels, exiting from the top of the panels. This is replaced by cooler heavier air drawn in at the bottom of the panels, which is in turn heated. The warmer, lighter air will fill the room while the colder, heavier air being drawn in at the bottom of the stove will create a continuous heat cycle, which gently moves air around the room.

OTHER OPTIONS
There is a non-convector option available for this stove, called the Popty Cube (Ciwb) and a model with both convector panels and an integral plinth, called the Popty Lofty.

Penguin Facts

Cooking on a penguin
All our cooker models have an oven box and top plate (oven top surface). The oven temperature can reach up to 240°C, but it will tick over comfortably between 140-180°C.  The temperature is controlled by both the amount of fuel you use and the air introduced through the air controls. You can fit a small saucepan and kettle on the top plate.

The oven is 200mm high, and comes with a single shelf. There are two shelf brackets at either side of the oven, giving you a higher or lower shelf position or you can place the shelf on the oven bottom. Additional shelves are available if required.

There is a vent hole at the rear of the oven box, this allows cooking smells to escape up the flue. If you want any cooking inspiration see our recipe page.

If you regularly use the top surface of the stove, there is an optional stainless steel top plate available, which sits on top of the stove and protects the surface. We offer two types of these. The top flue version has a “U” shaped cut out to sit around the flue. The rear flue version has no cut out. (If you want the rear flue version let us know at point of order, so we can remove the stove collar for you. Also ask your stockist for a “rear flue ready stove”). There is also a steel corner top plate option, called a “triongl”, a perfect size for a single kettle or pan to sit on, available in our online shop.

Ecodesign stoves. In order to be an Ecodesign stove, a stove must be independently verified to meet stringent emission requirements. Particulates or PMs are the most commonly recognised of these measures. The maximum limit for these is 40 mg/m3. This stove achieves 35 mg/m³. All other measures are all listed in our technical details table below. Click here for further Ecodesign info
